It’s a kind of magic
We talked with multi award winner designer Jun Fujiki, a man of few words but with great ideas. In his works he is toying with perceptions, creating optical illusions. We were told that he had not thought of a game when making OLE Coordinate System. Sony had a different view and it became the blueprint for Echochrome.
: How did you team up with Sony?
JF: Tatsuya Suzuki (Director/Associate Producer) saw OLE system at Japan Media Arts Festival. He wanted to make a game with Escher-like visuals too, so he contacted me. The Echochrome team was great.
: Did you think that the pioneer concept would involve high risk as well?
JF: No.
: The game got mostly good reviews – Metascore: 79 (PSP) and 81 (PS3) -, but the perplexing puzzles are surely disheartening for some. What do you think?
JF: Certainly, Echochrome might be confusing at first. It takes time to adapt to the world of optical illusions.
: What platform or interface would you like to experiment with?
JF: I do not have a particular platform or interface on my mind. The most important thing: they should suit the original vision. I would choose hardware or interface to fit the imaginary world.
: What genre would you like to explore? What kind of game would you like to make?
JF: I can not think of any genre now. I would like to create the “curious experience” genre. And to make a game with no set goal, something like a “virtual toy”. I want to show my works to many people. A game is a good opportunity for that.
: Finally, what games do you play?
JF: I do not have much time to devote to games recently. Back then Wizardry was my favorite.
